We tend to think of our pets as members of our family. It’s natural that we’d want to give them the medical care they deserve, but vet bills can be very expensive! Pet insurance can help you provide the medical care your pet needs if they’re involved in an accident or become ill. Depending on your level of cover, you can claim up to 85% of eligible vet bills up to a $20,000 limit per year (exclusions, benefit limits, sub-limits, and annual condition limits may apply).

Choosing insurance can be complicated and confusing. These clear, simple articles provide general information aiming to help you understand more about pet insurance, how it works, and why you should consider it.
As our animals age, medical care becomes more likely and complicated. For example, an average claim is $2,131.42 for a snake bite, $1,950.66 for diabetes, and $1,859.31 for cataracts (based on 2018–2019 PetSure claims statistics). Pet insurance could be the answer if you worry about being able to pay for the treatment your dog or cat may need.
It’s important for you to select a level of cover that suits your needs and those of your pet. As inclusions and exclusions vary between policies, it’s best to do your homework. We assist you with everything you need to know; from what pet insurance is, what pet insurance covers, eligibility, and the types of cover available that Choosi can arrange for you.
The right pet insurance for your pet will depend not only on the type of policy you choose, but also on the breed, age, and medical history of your dog or cat. You may decide you only want to cover your pet for accidents or extend that cover to illness too. Choosi only offers pet insurance from a range of brands that cover both specified accidental injuries and illness.
At some point in your pet’s life, it’s possible they may face a serious, life-threatening incident. It could be a car accident or a deadly bite from an insect or snake, or they might have eaten something they shouldn’t have. Here are our five steps for taking swift action when your pet’s in trouble.
Give your pet the care they need with pet insurance cover and optional extras like routine care for items such as vaccinations, desexing and worming.

Pet insurance works by helping to cover a portion of the cost of an eligible vet treatment for dogs and cats, by reimbursing that cost to you once you make a successful claim. Some brands offer accident-only cover for pets of all ages. However, with Choosi, you can apply for both specified accidental injury and illness cover for pets up to younger than 9 years old and up to younger than 16 years old for some policies. Depending on the policy you choose, you can claim up to 85% of eligible vet bills, up to $20,000 per year.1
In addition to specified accidental injuries and illnesses, some policies also include a benefit for emergency boarding, essential euthanasia, pet overseas travel insurance, and paralysis ticks, at no extra cost. Some policies include cover for dental illness with a two-year waiting period. You’ll need to check the product details of the policy you wish to purchase to find out what’s covered under your preferred plan, by reading the relevant Policy Booklet.
Generally, the following won’t be covered by pet insurance:
The above exclusions aren’t the full list of what’s not covered, so it’s important to check the Policy Booklet of the product you want to purchase to ensure you know exactly what won’t be covered by your policy.
Choosi compares pet insurance plans with and without an applicable excess. For any plans with an excess, you’ll receive a reimbursement of up to 85% of your eligible vet bills less the applicable excess.1
At some point, your pet may need to see a vet for treatment of either an injury from a specified accidental injury or an illness, and vet bills can be very expensive. Having pet insurance can help reduce the burden of these bills, so you can give your pet the treatment that they need.
* Pre-existing conditions and some illnesses are excluded. Benefit limits, sub-limits and annual condition limits apply. Claim for reimbursement. Information is general. Please read and consider the relevant Policy Booklet (containing the Product Disclosure Statement, Policy Terms and Conditions, and Financial Services Guide) before purchasing for specific details of the policy’s inclusions and exclusions based on your selected level of cover.
